Keas Award Scheme

While badges are fun to earn, it’s important to remember that they recognise your progression—they aren’t the goal itself. Having fun and taking part in the programme is the most important part!

⚜️ Membership Badge

Before you are invested into your Kea Club, you will need to complete your Membership Badge. Your Kaiārahi and other Keas will help you along the way!

There are three main parts to this:
  • Introduction to Scouting
  • Introduction to Keas
  • Safe From Harm

👑 Kōwhai Kea Award

The highest award you can earn as a Kea is the Kōwhai Kea Award. This is the ultimate Capstone Award for the entire Kea section and marks an incredible achievement in a young scout’s journey.

The Adventure Skills

The Adventure Skills are your direct pathway to outdoor fun. They are designed to help you gain the hands-on competencies you need to safely participate in, assist with, and eventually lead adventurous expeditions.

These strands move with you throughout your entire Scouting journey. Instead of being attached to a single section, you can complete any level of an Adventure Skill at any age, provided you have successfully met the previous levels. Each of the 7 core Adventure Skills features 9 progressive levels:

📢 Passing it Forward: You can be checked off by your Kaiārahi, another member of Scouting who is two or more levels above you, or another competent assessor. Once you hit Level 3, you can even start marking off peers working through Level 1!

🎯 Note: To complete your Kōwhai Kea Award, you must achieve 10 total Adventure Skill progressions (gaining a new level). You can spread these across multiple tracks or focus intensely on a chosen few! Record paths inside your Adventure Skills Handbook or digitally via Mahi Tahi.

Better World Framework

Better World helps you live out your Scout Promise directly by making positive contributions to your community, country, and the planet.

🔄 Every Better World project follows three distinct steps: 1. Experience: Learn closely about an issue that interests you. Find out how it impacts people and what you can do to assist.
2. Act: Participate in, help support, or lead a service project addressing the issue. Remember to Plan, Do, Review every step!
3. Share: Spread the word! Tell others what your club achieved and let them know how they can get involved.
There are 8 specialized Better World strands to explore:

To secure your final Kōwhai Kea Award, you must successfully complete 4 total Better World tracks across at least 2 different program categories. Full resources are located in the Better World Handbook or inside the online SCOUTS New Zealand portal.
